  Morocco is the closes located African country to Europe. At the Strait of Gibraltar the distance from Morocco to the Spanish coast is about 14 km.

The relief of Morocco is mountainous. Here are located the western highest chains of the Atlas Mountains. The southern parts of Morocco lie in the Sahara desert. The most fertile are the coastal plains. People grow there cereals, sugar cane, sugar beet, vineyards, olives, figs and citruses. Morocco is world producer and exporter of citrus fruits. Fishing is also developed – mackerel, sardines, tuna fish, shrimps, crabs and mussels are caught. The country is rich in phosphates from which it produces mineral fertilisers, metal cleaning detergents, etc.

Morocco has big ports. Casablanca is one of them. It is the largest city in Morocco. Founded in the place of the city of Anfa, which was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1468. In 18th c. the city was rebuilt and called Dar el Beida (in Arabic “white house”, a translation of the Spanish Casa Blanca).

The warm climate, beautiful beaches and nature, as well as the ancient cities, attract a number of tourists. One of these ancient cities is Marrakech, which was founded in 11 c. and is located in a fertile valley at the foot of High Atlas.
