The four large islands account for almost 98% of Japan’s area, and are located close to one another and are interconnected by specially constructed tunnels and bridges. The longest tunnel in the world (54 km) was built between the islands Honshu and Hokkaido.

The climate of Japan is diverse. The southern islands have subtropical and monsoon, and the northern ones – temperate climate. The largest city on the Hokkaido Island – Sapporo, is a famous winter sports centre.

Nine of the ten highest peaks in Japan are located in the central part of the Honshu Island. Among them is Japan’s national symbol – the Fuji volcano. It is located 100 km off Tokyo and is the highest point of the country. Fuji is a sacred mountain. At least once in their lifetime all Japanese must go on a pilgrimage to Mount Fuji.
