The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (the DPRK) is located in the northern half of the Korean peninsula. The larger part of the country is occupied by mountains. The western slopes of the mountains are more sloping and gradually connect with a wide coastal plain, which is the main agricultural region in North Korea. Rice is grown here on 1/3 of the arable lands.

Since its foundation after the World War II North Korea is ruled by the Communist regime. Agriculture, industry and healthcare are under the control of the government. Only people who are loyal to the Communist regime can live in the capital Pyongyang.

Commerce and communications with the rest of the world are limited. The basic branches are the extraction industry (coal, iron ore, tungsten, zinc, and graphite), metallurgy, machine building and chemical industry.
