Azerbaijan lies on two continents – Europe and Asia. To the east it has a wide outlet on the Caspian Sea. On its territory is the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which became an independent Armenian republic of Artsakh after fierce conflicts.

The terrain of Azerbaijan is half mountainous and half flat. The mountains Lesser Caucasus in the southwest, Greater Caucasus in the north and the Talysh Mountains in the southeast form the vast lowland of Koura-Araks. These are the names of the two rivers running through the lowland. It is the most important agricultural region in the country. Here are grown cereals, grapes, cotton, tea, rice, fruits, vegetables, etc. The most important of the industries is oil, natural gas and ore production. The oil production near Baku started as early as 1870. The population of Azerbaijan consists of more than 90% Muslims.
