The island of Cyprus is located in the eastern part of The Mediterranean, 80 km south of the Turkish coastline. Its terrain is mountainous. The climate is hot, Mediterranean with average annual temperature of 20.5 degrees Celsius. Precipitation is scarce. In Cyprus there are no constantly running rivers. In the past the island was covered with forests, but after their cutting down their place was taken by bush formations. The central plains are suitable for arable lands. Citrus fruits, olives, grapes and others are grown. Grazing grounds take up 1/10 of the island’s area.
Cyprus has been a colony of many countries since ancient times. In 1960 Cyprus was awarded its independence by its last conqueror Great Britain. In 1974 Turkey invaded the islands and declares the establishment of a Turkish republic – Northern Cyprus, which has not been recognized by the international institutions to date.
Industry in the Turkish zone is better developed.
In the town of Kyrenia, which is an ancient harbour, there is a museum of castaways.
The Greek Cyprus republic mainly develops tourism. About 2 million tourists visit the country annually. |
