Ireland takes up the better part of the eponymous island. Its Atlantic shores are heavily indented by a number of bays and peninsulas, whereas in the east its shores are low and slightly indented.

The interior of the country represents vast lowland with a number of hills, deep rivers, lakes and marshes.

The climate of the country is typically temperate, oceanic, formed under the influence of the warm North Atlantic current Gulf Stream. The wet oceanic air masses carry ample precipitation. That is why the better part of the country is covered with dense grasses, mosses and aromatic wild flowers. This is the reason why Ireland is often called by the poetic name Emerald Island. A number of rare plants grow in the peaty marshes, which are endangered by the wide use of peat as a fuel and manure.

The lands of Ireland were inhabited more than 9,000 years ago when they were part of the mainland. Persistent and hard-working, the Irish managed to preserve their traditions. In agriculture the leading industry is still stock breeding.

Also developed are the electronics, the chemical and food processing industries.

An interesting landmark is the St. Patrick cathedral – with its length of 91 m it is one of the biggest in Ireland. It is located in the centre of Dublin and was built in 1191, and the church next to it has existed since 5th c. Ireland attracts many foreign tourists with its beautiful nature, exciting history and original culture.
